When fantasy football was first introduced, I, like many others, jumped at the chance to take part in a national competition.

I relished pitting my footballing wits against thousands of others, carefully making the selections and balancing the limited purchase fund that was available.

It took a long time to fine tune my team but I still entered many competitions, dreaming of the big prizes! I dreamt of winning thousands and spending it freely on the good life.

Surely I knew enough to win all of these leagues?

Posting my entries, or pressing countless buttons on my phone, I never contemplated losing. The money would be mine – it’s easy this fantasy lark.

Then came the managing of my team, dealing with transfers and making sure that all of my hard-earned points were correctly awarded.

This took a lot of time yet the first published league table usually ended all my hopes of winning.

Mass entries from "Steve in London" or "Tony in Manchester" dominated all the fantasy leagues. The trouble was that was all it was – a thousands to one chance fantasy! The dream had died.

Now it's different!
